Why Choose BEDMAX?

The horse that you care for and ride today is the product of millions of years of evolution.

In their natural state, wild horses are highly socialised herd animals, fully equipped to survive and thrive in temperate, open grassland or steppe. They have evolved to travel huge distances in a constant quest for food and water, with small, hard, upright feet capable of carrying them safely over hard, dry and often stony ground.

So how do you keep a horse healthy and happy in a stable or loose box - an environment that is pretty much the opposite of its natural state?

This was our starting point when we began to develop BEDMAX over ten years ago. How do you create a bedding that helps to make a stable as healthy, comfortable and natural as humanly possible? Based on our research and our surveys of our customers, these are our priorities:

DUST FREE. Our customers recognise dust as the main threat to their horses' health in the stable, so we screen our shavings and screen them again to eliminate dust. We're confident that BEDMAX has one of the lowest levels of dust on the horse bedding market.

Deeper Comfort. We cut a proportion of our shavings to a larger size, because a mixture of large, medium and small shavings creates a bed that is deeper, more aerated and more cushioning; it drains moisture from the top layer down to the smaller, more absorbent layer beneath; and it lasts longer.

Higher Protection. Our deep, springy bed offers more protection for joints when your horse lies down or rolls, and we dry our shavings to a carefully controlled moisture content, because this helps prevent hooves from drying out. We use pine timber wherever possible because it has proven, natural antibacterial properties.

Lower Maintenance. Because they're bigger and dust free, BEDMAX shavings are easier to muck out, and they stick less both to dung and to tails, manes and coats. They're clean, easy to use, and because they last longer they're exceptional value for money.

More Sustainable. We make BEDMAX from renewable forestry timber. We source this exclusively in the UK, and we buy locally to minimise transport. And we've carried out research that proves the best way to dispose of used shavings is to compost them and return them to the soil.

Entirely Natural. Our shavings are completely and absolutely natural. There are no additives or contaminants in BEDMAX, and we even leave the bark on because that contains beneficial properties.
